5 ways to extend your pool season

Living in Florida we get the luxury of keeping our pools open year-round. However, as the daylight hours start to dwindle and we get closer to the end of the year, the tolerable temperatures go away. Here are some easy steps to stretch out your pool season!

1.       Robot technology

Does your pool get heavy debris between service making you unwilling to use the pool? Perhaps look into getting a surface-cleaning automated robot or an automated robot for cleaning the bottom of the pool. Is your pool not equipped for this? They do offer stand-alone robots as well to get your job done.

2.       Wireless and wi-fi technology

Waiting for your pool to heat can be a hassle causing you to skip using the pool all together. Getting control of your pool through a phone or tablet gives you the power to operate your pool before you’re ready to use it.

3.       Warm your pool up

As the water cools down to unbearable temperature consider investing in a pool heater to stretch out your swimming experience by months! A few ways to heat your pool are:

·         Gas Heaters– They typically run on natural gas or propane and are the most common/fastest way to heat your pool and spa

·         Heat Pumps– These devices work by using ambient air outside to heat up your pool water.

4.       Utilize Pool lighting

Choosing a fun color or theme can maximize your pool experience. When the kids are off to school and the day hours are gone, pool lights have the potential for a nighttime pool party or a sunset private swim.

5.       Maximize Heat Retention

Using a liquid solar retainer or a solar blanket can help retain up to 70% of your swimming pool heating cost. This will prolong your swim season by prolonging your heat!

Tropical storm pool guide

Tropical Storm - Before the Storm Preparation

Living in Northeast Florida, we will have our occasional tropical storms.                                                                      Being prepared beforehand can help set your pool up to handle the storm. We know it can be difficult to prepare for the unknown, so we are here to help. Follow our
step-by-step guide below to help you prepare!

1. Over-chlorinate Pool
Shocking or over-chlorinating can add an extra line of defense against contaminated debris caused by extreme weather.

2. Prepare Yard and Pool Surroundings
You will hear a lot of misinformation during this time about pool furniture. Despite some
recommendations to put patio furniture in your pool, do NOT do this. Metal can cause stains and is detrimental to pools. Instead, stow any loose objects or furniture inside your home!

3. DO NOT DRAIN YOUR WATER
One other form of misinformation you will hear is to drain your pool in preparation of the severe storm.
Draining your pool can lead to many issues and we do NOT recommend it. Pools are designed to be full.
Instead of draining, ensure deck drains and other drainage are clear and functional.

4. Power Down Pool Equipment
At your pool equipment area, turn off all breakers controlling pool equipment and outdoor appliances such as your pumps, heaters, lighting and outdoor kitchens.

5. Equipment Protection
If you expect flooding, we recommend removing the pumps from your system and storing in your home. If
flooding is not expected in the equipment area, wrap them in plastic sheets or tarps to make sure they are as secure as possible!

Storm Aftermath Guide For Success

When the storm has passed and you switch to recovery mode, it can be overwhelming to figure out what is the best course of action to get your pool back in tip-top shape. Following the guide we have set up below can alleviate this stress for you.

1. Call Hidden Gem Pools
If your pool looks to be in need of professional help or extra service due to an extreme storm, give us a call so we can help create the best plan possible to get you up to speed quickly!

2.Start Cleanup

Before we get your pool equipment back up and running, we need to begin with a cleanup. Start by removing
large pieces of debris from pool and equipment area. Using a rack for the equipment area and a net for your pool area, begin removing a majority of debris that formed around the equipment or bottom of the pool.

3. Power up Your Swimming Pool
If you expect your equipment flooded during the storm, we recommend you wait until it fully dries and call a professional before powering back up. Once the equipment is dry and debris is mostly cleared up, you will need to confirm the skimmer baskets and pump baskets are clear. You can now power up your pool
equipment.

4. Inspect Equipment
If you’re having any issues powering up equipment or damages occur, give Hidden Gem Pools a call. Confirm that the pool is circulating normally (you may need to drain water down to normal levels). Balance your water chemistry and clean the filter frequently!

5. Monitor Equipment
Keep a close eye on your equipment for the next few days to ensure everything is circulating and functioning correctly. You will want to monitor your pool chemistry closely and brush the pool often to help prevent algae!
